„The book is an excellent source of information on the appliedaspect of Earth sciences. In my opinion, the book is worthreading, especially for those who are professional geologists, geographers or geophysicists. They may be surprised by thenew, sometimes amazing applications of the methodology of theirwell-known disciplines.“ (Geologos, November 2010) "[The book] is concerned with evidence of crime from the worldbeneath our feet: it's more Time Team than Silent Witness... . This book shows that a great number of differentscientific instruments and techniques are being used to provideevidence that will stand up in court.„ (Geomatics World, March/April 2009) “The work is an excellent introductory text, written in a veryaccessible style, for students and practitioners alike ... . Tohave all this in one book is a great addition to the forensicgeoscience literature.„ (GiS Professional, February2009) “[This books is] an excellent coverage of the current state ofknowledge in both forensics research and the practical applicationof these geological concepts and techniques.... The whole book ispeppered with useful and appropriate examples from theauthors' wide experiences and also from the wider literature. This book is an essential purchase." (Macaulay Institute, November 2008)

This book is a comprehensive introduction to the application ofgeoscience to criminal investigations. Clearly structuredthroughout, the text follows a path from the large-scaleapplication of remote sensing, landforms and geophysics in thefirst half to the increasingly small-scale examination of rock andsoils to trace amounts of material. The two scales of investigationare linked by geoscience applications to forensics that can beapplied at a range of dimensions. These include the use oftopographic mapping, x-ray imaging, geophysics and remote sensingin assessing whether sediment, rocks or concrete may have hidden orburied materials inside for example, drugs, weapons, bodies.
This book describes the wider application of many differentgeoscience-based methods in assisting law enforcers withinvestigations such as international and national crimes ofgenocide and pollution, terrorism and domestic crime as well asaccident investigation. The text makes a clear link to theincreasingly important aspects of the spatial distribution ofgeoscience materials (be it soil sampling or the distribution ofmud-spatter on clothing), Geographic Information Science andgeostatistics.
* A comprehensive introductionto the application of geoscience to criminal investigation
* Examples taken from an environmental and humanitarianperspective in addition to the terrorist and domestic criminalcases more regularly discussed
* A chapter on the use of GIS in criminalistics and informationon unusual applications and methods - for example underwater scenemapping and extraterrestrial applications
* Material on how geoscience methods and applications are used ata crime scene
* Accompanying website including key images and references tofurther material
* An invaluable text for both undergraduate and postgraduatestudents taking general forensic science degrees or geosciencecourses
"The whole book is peppered with useful and appropriateexamples from the authors' wide experiences and also from thewider literature... an essential purchase for anyforensic science department as well as for any law enforcementorganisation." Lorna Dawson, Macaulay Institute
