Was ist Exil? - Ovids Tristia und Epistulae ex Ponto

Das Buch bietet eine Interpretation der in der Forschung vieldiskutierten Exilelegien Ovids aus der Perspektive der römischen Ideen- und Kulturgeschichte. Die Aufmerksamkeit gilt der Reflexion des Dichters über das Exil, insbesondere den von ihm verwendeten Vorstellungen der allgemeinen römischen Kultur und der griechischen und römischen Literatur, den Denkfiguren, die er selber beisteuert, und der Kombination dieser Elemente zu einem gedanklichen Konstrukt „Exil“. Angesichts der Fülle der Aussagen Ovids und der interpretatorischen Probleme konzentriert sich die Untersuchung auf zwei wesentliche Aspekte dieses Konstrukts: die Reaktion des elegischen Ich auf die Nachricht von seiner Verbannung und den Nexus Exil-Dichtung-Wahnsinn. Die detaillierte Behandlung dieser Aspekte wird durch Überlegungen zur Struktur des ovidischen Begriffs vom Exil und einen inhaltlichen Überblick ergänzt. *** This work offers an interpretation of Ovid’s much-discussed exile poetry from the perspective of Roman ideological and cultural history. Attention is given to the poet’s reflections about exile and in particular to his presentation of Roman culture in general and of Greek and Roman literature, to the ideas he himself contributes, and to the way these elements are combined to form an intellectual construct of ‘exile’. In view of the number of Ovid’s own pronouncements and the difficulties of interpretation, the study focuses on two specific aspects of this construct: the reaction of the elegiac persona to the news of his banishment, and the nexus of exile-poetry-madness. The detailed treatment of these themes is complemented by discussion of the structure of Ovid’s concept of exile and an overview of content.
