Philosophia methodo scientiis propria explanata

Benedikt Stattler (1728-1797) entwarf ein theologisches Reformprogramm, das sich zum Ziel setzte, die Leibniz-Wolff’sche Schulphilosophie im katholischen Denken einzubürgern. Gerade durch die Rezeption Wolffs als philosophischer Erneuerer geriet er in die Schusslinie der konservativen Kreise der Kirche. Teile seines späteren Werks gerieten auf den Index der verbotenen Bücher. Die zentralen Publikationen Stattlers bilden auch die Elemente seines Systems. Dieses gliedert sich in drei Bereiche: den Bereich der natürlichen Vernunft, den Bereich der begnadeten Vernunft und denjenigen des begnadeten Willens. Das System wird durch die natürliche Vernunft in dem hier nachgedruckten Werk „Die durch die den Wissenschaften eigene Methode erklärte Philosophie“ (1769-1772) grundgelegt.

Benedikt Stattler (1728-1797) developed a theological reform programme with the aim of embedding the scholasticism of Leibniz and Wolff in Catholic theology. By espousing the idea of Wolff as a philosophical reformer Stattler placed himself in the firing line of conservatives within the Church. Some of his later work was placed on the Index of Prohibited Books. Stattler’s principal works also comprise the elements of his system. This is divided into three spheres: the sphere of natural reason, the sphere of sublime reason and that of divine will. The foundations of this system in natural reason are set out in the work reprinted here, „Philosophy explained using the Methods of Science“ (1769-1772).
