Coregonid fishes are an interesting and important group of freshwater and anadromous fishes. These fishes occur in many lakes and rivers of the northern hemisphere, mainly in cold water bodies, and they are very adaptable to diverse ecological conditions. They support substantial commercial, subsistence, and recreational fisheries and are managed intensively in various regions of North America and Europe. Therefore coregonid fishes are intensively reared in order to augment natural populations. From a biological point of view, coregonids are important study objects for evolutionary and Zoogeographie problems, specifically for recent speciation processes. Despite intensive research many taxonomic and genetic problems in this group are still unresolved. Other research areas in this group are related to general fish biology and interspecies interactions with predators or newly introduced fish species. This volume contains 53 papers given at the Sixth International Symposium on the Biology and Management of Coregonid Fishes, held in September 1996 in Konstanz, Germany. The objectives of the symposium were to address different aspects of biology, genetics, fisheries and management of coregonid fishes. These themes are reflected in the conference sessions. 40 oral and 62 poster presentations were given at the meeting. In addition, workshops on reoligotrophication, aquaculture and on standardization of meristic and morphometric parameters were held during the symposium.
