Ob Götter- oder Höllenschmied, Athlet oder Schmerzensmann, Held des Fortschritts oder Bummelant – das Motiv des Arbeiters stand nahezu jeder Ausdeutung offen. Der Aufstieg des letzten Emblems sozialer wie politischer Mobilisierung begann nach 1848, erlebte seinen Höhepunkt 1917 und endete nach 1950. Seltsamerweise waren es die Maler, die das Motiv eher entdeckten und ausrangierten als die Intellektuellen. Christoph Schmidt verfolgt Auf und Ab dieser Motivgeschichte zwischen Frankreich und Russland. Dabei stehen Bilder von Courbet, Menzel, Kustodiev, den Konstruktivisten und Sozrealisten im Mittelpunkt. Hier kommt auch die Korrespondenz zwischen Malerei und Photographie zur Sprache.
