Self-mode-locking and passive-mode-locking were investigated in quantum-dash and quantum-dot chips at 1550 nm wavelength range. Optical pulses with pulse-width ranging from a few hundred of femtoseconds up to picosecond were obtained. The laser linewidth was characterised by fitting to Lorentzian distribution where pulse-to-pulse timing jitter is consequently measured.
