No Hit Wonder Vol.3

In „No Hit Wonder“ zieht Volker Renner Verbindungslinien zwischen Bildern, Musik und Erinnerung. Er paart Fotos aus seinem Bildarchiv mit Titeln von Songs, die man als One-Hit-Wonder bezeichnen würde. Beim Betrachten der Aufnahmen erklingen sie im kollektiven Gedächtnis oder Dank der mitgelieferten Spotify-Playlist als Hintergrundmusik und öffnen einen Assoziationsraum. Wie in einem Loop oder einer Erinnerungsschleife wiederholen sich die Bilder in den drei Bänden, jedoch mit veränderten Ausschnitten und Songs: Vol. I zeigt das Ausgangsbild, Vol. II einen festgelegten Ausschnitt daraus und Vol. III die Leerstelle, die durch den Eingriff in das Foto entstanden ist. Die Leerstellen werden zu Projektionsflächen, zu einem Echo und einer Erinnerung an Bilder, die sich wie Songs auf der „inneren Leinwand“ abspielen.

In “No Hit Wonder,” Volker Renner draws connections between pictures, music, and memories. He matches photographs from his image archive to titles of songs one would call one-hit wonders. Firmly lodged in the collective memory, the tunes will come to mind as one looks at the pictures—or be heard thanks to the enclosed Spotify playlist—and prompt manifold associations. As though in a musical or mental loop, the pictures recur in the three volumes, though with changes of detail and different songs: vol. I presents the original image; vol. II, a chosen segment of it; and vol. III, the void left by the manipulation of the photograph. The blanks become projection screens, echoes and recollections of pictures that play like songs on the “screen of the mind.”
