Karlsruhe meets India

Die Bundesgesellschaft mit ihren dreiunddreißig Zweiggesellschaften und ich persönlich gratulieren der DIG Karlsruhe sehr herzlich zu ihrem 50-jährigen Bestehen! Die DIG Karlsruhe ist eine der älteren unter unseren Zweiggesellschaften, und sie hat ein besonderes, gerade für den heutigen Stand der deutsch-indischen Beziehungen bedeutsames Pofil. Sie wurde gegründet vom damaligen Geschäftsführer des Kernforschungszentrums Karlsruhe, Dr. Rudolf Greifeld, und hat seitdem einen Schwerpunkt bei der Verbindung von deutschen und indischen Naturwissenschaftlern, die in Karlsruhe arbeiten oder über Karlsruhe zueinander in Beziehung getreten sind. Indien ist seit Langem und inzwischen auf vielen Gebieten ein wichtiges Partnerland Deutschlands in Wissenschaft und Forschung. So richtig ins Bewusstsein einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit ist dies erst in den letzten Jahren getreten. Wichtige deutsche Forschungsstellen und -vereinigungen haben Verbindungsbüros in Indien eröffnet; der Austausch von Wissenschaftlern hat stark zugenommen. Ich sehe eine besondere Aufgabe der Zweiggesellschaft Karlsruhe darin, Kontakte mit indischen Gastwissenschaftlern zu knüpfen und ihnen die Menschen und die Kultur in Deutschland nahezubringen. Der Bundesvorstand tritt für einen eigenen Beitrag der DIG (Bundesgesellschaft) und der Zweiggesellschaften an Hochschul- und Forschungsstandorten zum deutsch-indischen wissenschaftlichen Austausch ein, z. B. durch die Organisation von Symposien. – Die nächste Jahresversammlung der Deutsch-Indischen Gesellschaft wird im September 2010 in Karlsruhe stattfinden und mit Hilfe der dortigen DIG ausgerichtet werden. Vertreter von Zweiggesellschaften aus ganz Deutschland werden in Karlsruhe zusammenkommen. Von dieser Versammlung sollen Impulse für gemeinsame Veranstaltungen mit indischen Studenten und Wissenschaftlern in Deutschland ausgehen.
Attraktiv für neue Mitglieder zu sein, vor allem für Jugendliche, ist ein wesentliches Anliegen aller auf Dauer angelegten Gesellschaften und Vereine. Die DIG Karlsruhe verfügt über fünfzig Jahre Erfahrungen damit; und insbesondere Technik und Wissenschaft bleiben ein „junges“ Thema. Die DIG Karlsruhe hat zwei Kandidatinnen, für den vom Vorstand der DIG (Bundesgesellschaft) beschlossenen Jugendbeirat nominiert, der im Januar in Berlin erstmals zusammentreten wird. Die DIG Karlsruhe ist sich auch bewusst, dass von Anfang an einer der wichtigsten Aspekte des Lebens unserer Gesellschaften die gemeinsame Mitgliedschaft von Menschen indischer und deutscher Abstammung war, und dass dies so bleiben muss.
Ich wünsche der Deutsch-Indischen Gesellschaft Karlsruhe im Interesse der deutsch-indischen Beziehungen und der vielen Menschen und konkreten Projekte, die dahinter stehen, eine lange und erfolgreiche Zukunft und jetzt ein 50-jähriges Jubiläum, das im gutem Gedächtnis aller Beteiligten bleiben wird.
The national body, along with its thirty-three branches, and myself congratulate the DIG Karlsruhe on its 50th anniversary! The DIG Karlsruhe is one of the oldest branches and has an impressive profile particularly in the light of the Indo-German relationship we have today. It was founded by Dr. Greifeld, a former director of the Nuclear Research Centre Karlsruhe, and since then has been particularly active in promoting contacts between German and Indian scientists working in Karlsruhe or those who have come into contact through Karlsruhe. India has been an important partner with Germany for a long time that now includes many fields of science and research. It is only recently that this fact has become more widely appreciated. Important German research organisations and associations have opened affiliated offices in India; together with a sharp rise in the exchange of scientists. I consider that the Karlsruhe branch has a particularly important role to play by making contact with Indian scientists and introducing them to the German people and German culture. The governing body of the National Indo-German Society (DIG) is requesting that it and its branches are represented at institutes of higher education and research institutes to promote academic exchange for example by organising symposia.
The next annual conference of the Indo-German Society will take place in Karlsruhe during September 2010 where the local branch of the DIG will help in the organisation. Representatives from all branches throughout Germany will assemble in Karlsruhe. The conference theme is to give provide an impulse for joint meetings of Indian and German students and researchers in Germany.
It is an important objective of all associations and societies to have a longterm goal to attract new members, especially younger ones. The DIG Karlsruhe has fifty years of experience with this; especially with technology and science remaining a „young“ subject. The DIG Karlsruhe has nominated two candidates for election to the youth advisory committee proposed by the governing body of the DIG and scheduled to meet in Berlin for the first time in January 2010. The DIG Karlsruhe has always been aware that one of the most important aspects of life in the society is maintaining the united membership of people of both Indian and German descent.
I wish the DIG Karlsruhe, in the interest of Indo-German relationships and the many people and concrete projects associated with it, a long and successful future and a 50th anniversary celebration, that will remain a happy memory for everyone involved.
