"Der herrschende Geist der Thorheit"

Die Frankfurter Lotterienormen des 18. Jahrhunderts und ihre Durchsetzung

von Christian Kullick
In the 18th century, the „Lotto fever“ had the German territories firmly under control. Countless class and number lotteries vied for players of all classes. By issuing edicts, the authorities tried to stem this phenomenon or even profit from it. Using the example of the imperial city of Frankfurt, the development of lottery advertising and its technical and legal requirements are examined in order to study the processes of standardization and enforcement conducted by the Frankfurt Council. Here, the role of Jewish lottery collectors constitutes a red thread which is being pursued through the book. The Council's challenges with ever-changing, organized gambling are a prime example of the difficulties of economic governance in the early modern period.
