Large-Scale Radiating Integrated Circuits
von Aydin BabakhaniThis book explains how we can exploit the capability of today’s silicon technology to design radiating structures (antennas). In the past, it was not possible to implement on-chip radiating structures due to the low speed of transistors and the large size of antennas. With today’s silicon technology, it is possible to implement chips that operate in a frequency range of several hundred GHz, at which range antennas can be implemented easily, directly on the silicon chip. As an example of a large-scale radiating integrated circuit, this book introduces the technique of Near-Field Direct Antenna Modulation (NFDAM). Unlike conventional transmitter architectures where signals are modulated before the antenna, NFDAM transmitters generate information by directly modulating the antenna’s electromagnetic near-field boundary conditions. In these systems, a single antenna can be used to transmit independent information to different directions simultaneously. This book will also introduce a novel, convex optimization technique for designing large-scale radiating integrated circuits.
