Wacken-Wasteland
Unfamiliar tunes are audible from the inside of the artist’s workshop . Black metal, and sometimes even death metal reach our ears, both hardly fit our imagination of a relaxed drawing session. Every now and then we hear some more familiar songs: David Bowies “Future Legend” for example, with its well known line: “This ain’t Rock’n’Roll – this is genocide”, or Lemmy Kilmister, featuring the London Symphony Orchestra, with the old protest song “Eve of destruction”, originally perfomed by Barry McGuire. “The eastern world it is explodin’, violence flarin’, bullets loadin’…” Mood could not fit any better to what is created on the 14 new screens by Jens Rusch. He needs this compliance as well as the personal dialogue with the painted persons. “Postapocalyptic” is a theme which is an inherent part of the legendary Wacken Open-Air festival since several years, a dark and depressing scene, a festival of surviving after an atomic catastrophe. For Jens Rusch who is living near the nuclear power plant of Brunsbüttel it is an even more multifaceted imagination than know from the Mad Max movies.
He works on the pictorial implementation of a humanity which has nothing more perfected than its own destruction. Musical quotes give inspiration to him: “Fleas, the size of rats sucking on rats the size of cats”: this quote of Bowie had to serve just for two new mixed techniques. The ambiguity of “Eve” by Barry McGuire brought the Eve elements into the paintings. Out of “Evening” shortly was made a symbolic Amazon , an End Time female warrior, an “Eve” who makes herself more attractive with trash and rag as it would try so many designers in vain. And under this name she might be standing for an imagination of the new attempt to justify humanity on this explored and destroyed planet. This way ideas come to pictures. “Eve of Destruction”.
Due to this the heavy-metal festival is what metal musicians made to their hymn they are shouting to the masses for years. The artistic synergy project “W: O*Art” with its grown up exhibition at the foundation campsite just has this sense: to bring together artists and musicians, highlighting similarities. In developing this idea Jens Rusch is involved prevail. The Wacken- Wasteland calendar 2017 is another step: inspired by the paintings of Jens Rusch the author Gerd Scherm created the Poetry cycle WACKEN OPEN AIR LINES – a poetric dystopia told in 12 four liners. As a print this calendar was implemented by Frank Steinmetz – three brothers in the spirit under the wings of the muse horse PEGASUS.
