This new edition of Wessner’s Scholia will include his original text and critical apparatus, whereas his preface will be complemented by an additamentum designed to account for recent discoveries concerning the ancient commentary and its reappearances in Carolingian milieux and 15th-century Italy, most notably in Giorgio Valla’s commentary (Venice 1486). Remarkable advances on both the codicological and editorial level have been made that make it necessary to reconsider Wessner’s approach, particularly since the discovery that 11th-century codex L (MS Leiden, Bibliotheek der Rijksuniversiteit, BPL, 82), on which Wessner had based his information is a copy of MS Cambridge, King’s College, 52 (Δ), which also shares some sections with MS Cambridge, Trinity College, O.4.11 [1242] (Θ). These and few other witnesses record the early phases of the exegetical activity on Juvenal’s text carried out in the circles of Remy of Auxerre, and are closer to the so-called commentum uetus. As for what Wessner had called scholia recentiora, they will be published in the middle apparatus (following Grazzini’s edition for φχ and Grazzini & Gallo’s forthcoming edition for ΔΘZ Valla) in order to provide a running comparison with the scholia uetustiora.
