Is there a specifically European identity? If so, how has this identity developed, what does it consist in and what are its characteristics? Contrary to previous attempts to find answers to the questions of European integration, which were oriented towards the present and the future, this book approaches the subject in retrospect. It shows to what extent historians of the past centuries and decades have tried to deal with the phenomenon “Europe”, and what their connotations and objectives were. Besides historians strictly so called, the book presents and puts into context humanistically educated geographers and men of letters, “statisticians” and economists, politicians and philosophers, lawyers and political scientists.
