Hambach

Today's viewers of Hambach Castle see a threefold ruin, which is nevertheless highly significant in terms of history and art history: after the „Kästenburg“, which was probably built in the 11th century, was destroyed in 1552 and again in 1688, the castle ruins, now also known as „Hambach Castle“, were used for rallies in the 19th century – including the famous „Hambach Festival“ of 1832. Since then, several restoration and renovation campaigns have taken place and today the castle complex skilfully combines the old with the new, whereby since 2006 the preserved building fabric has been carefully cleaned of the ingredients of earlier renovations and contemporary new accents have been set.
