There's a lot of things happening in Jan's life: It's springtime, and Fanny, Jan's cat, is about to give birth to her first litter of kittens. Then there's some heart surgery coming up, but Jan had rather not think about it too much. He prefers to knock about with Josh, his best mate, down at the creek. And he helps Lara-Sofie, a girl from his class, with her maths. The kittens arrive, and they're ever so cute - Jan knows he's never seen anything like it before! When he shows them to Lara-Sofie before anybody else, it's little wonder that his best mate Josh is hurt. To make things worse, two bigger boys take away the knife Josh lent him - how can he ever prove that friendship is more to him than an empty word? Things come to a head when someone is hurt in a knife attack, and suspicion falls on his very friend Josh...
