In this work, static properties as well as dynamics of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates are investigated. Two main topics concern the roton minimum in the dispersion relation and anisotropic two-dimensional solitons. Both phenomena are planned to be investigated experimentally in chromium condensates, and we use numerical methods in order to simulate possible experiments and probe feasible parameter spaces. We find various ground-state structures in the density distribution of layered condensates, connected with different unstable roton modes. Possible ways of experimental observation are discussed. We also propose a set-up for the dynamical creation of anisotropic solitons. For the simulation, we use a realistic model, including three-particle losses and random noise in the s-wave scattering length, which stems from the current in the Feshbach coils. Collisions of two solitons are also investigated.
