Nonlinear Load Models:

Requirements, Properties and Limitations

von Anna Fölting
The progressive application of harmonics producing devices in electrical distribution networks leads to an increasing importance of harmonic simulation studies. The validity and significance of these studies are primarily determined by applied non‐linear load models, which are available in many different approaches of specific assumptions. Thus, correspondent simulation results are hardly comparable and difficult to validate.
This thesis gives a practical guidance for application of nonlinear load models in harmonic simulation studies by analysis of respective requirements, properties and limitations. Commonly known conceptual nonlinear load models are evaluated based on specified requirements. A most suitable approach for simulation of mass implementation of nonlinear devices is identified. The associated simulation model is specified and implemented, in order to define model validity and limitations. A simulation environment is built up to confirm the practicability in combination with available conventional system component models. Finally, future challenges concerning “waveform” stability are demonstrated and discussed.
