Patterns for Person-Centered e-Learning

von Michael Derntl
Current approaches to learning and teaching take advantage of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to support learners and instructors during the learning activities. One promising approach is Person-Centered e-Learning (PCeL), which basically follows a blended learning strategy with strong focus on interpersonal relationships based on the attitudes of acceptance, realness, and understanding. However, such enhanced approaches are more demanding than conventional education with respect to personal involvement and capacities required. The main challenge is how successful PCeL scenarios can be captured to enable documentation, reuse, and research. To face this challenge, this book adopts the pattern approach, which is rooted in architecture and software engineering, by describing and conceptually modeling reusable pieces of PCeL design at different levels of detail and abstraction. The Unified Modeling Language was extended with a set of stereotypes to enable dynamic and structural modeling of PCeL scenarios. The book contains about 50 patterns, valuable insights from the educator's perspective, student reactions, and a case study showing the application of the patterns to a project-based course.
