The Contested 'Parliamentarisation' of EU Foreign and Security Policy

The role of the European Parliament following the introduction of the Treaty of Lisbon

von Anna Herranz-Surrallés
Since the Treaty of Lisbon came into effect there seems to have been a remarkable increase in the European Parliament’s involvement in foreign and security affairs. In her study, Anna Herranz-Surrallés reviews the first 18 months following implementation of the treaty in order to assess the significance of the perceived changes in the role of the European Parliament. To do so, she analyses the three interrelated domains of institutions and budget, international agreements, and security and defence policy over the last months. In conclusion, she identifies the chances and challenges but also the risks of the current development.
