No. 272 Muster / Pattern
Graphic patterns are de ned by their uniform structure and rhythm, be this geometric or organic, purely dec- orative or related to traditions. Compiled in pattern books they serve the designer, similarly to colour and material samples, as a source of inspiration, template or ex- ample. On the other hand, design, thought, and be- havioural patterns are important not only for the work of the designer, but also as a way of understanding the world. Besides the ctive person Joe Bloggs, who represents the average citizen, and the model house that is open to all as an embodiment of houses of the same type, we also take a look at the pattern in all areas of life. In addition, we examine the working methods of the information designer Kim Albrecht, present the Amsterdam- and Cairo-based collective Foundland, and discuss new approaches and strategies in museum design, taking the reorientation of the Biotopia natural history museum in Munich as an example. In the Arch- ive section, we continue the history of sustainability in design with considering the experimental town of Arcosanti and in the fourth part of our anniversary series “Revisiting the Past” we re ect on the current mean- ing of Europe for design, and vice versa. form 272 will be published on 15 June 2017.
