The Hungarian graphic designer István Irsai (* 1896) was part of a group of Jewish prisoners in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp (known as the Kasztner group) who were exchanged at the end of 1944. While he was still in the camp, Irsai sketched drafts of ‘minimalist drawings portraying everyday life in the camp and expressing intense emotions with great restraint’ (Miryam Sommerfeld). An introductory text (Ladislaus Löb) about Irsai’s work and an outline of his biography (Miryam Sommerfeld-Irsai) supplement the main text of the book. The book was translated into English by Ladislaus Löb.
