Thermal Design
Heat Sinks, Thermoelectrics, Heat Pipes, Compact Heat Exchangers, and Solar Cells
von H. S. LeeThe proposed is written as a senior undergraduate or the first-yeargraduate textbook, covering modern thermal devices such as heatsinks, thermoelectric generators and coolers, heat pipes, and heatexchangers as design components in larger systems. These devicesare becoming increasingly important and fundamental in thermaldesign across such diverse areas as microelectroniccooling, green or thermal energy conversion, and thermalcontrol and management in space, etc. However, there isno textbook available covering this range of topics. Theproposed book may be used as a capstone design course after thefundamental courses such as thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, andheat transfer. The underlying concepts in this book coverthe, 1) understanding of the physical mechanisms of thethermal devices with the essential formulas and detailedderivations, and 2) designing the thermal devices inconjunction with mathematical modeling, graphical optimization, andoccasionally computational-fluid-dynamic (CFD)simulation. Important design examples are developedusing the commercial software, MathCAD, which allowsthe students to easily reach the graphical solutions evenwith highly detailed processes. In other words, the designconcept is embodied through the example problems. The graphicalpresentation generally provides designers or students with the richand flexible solutions toward achieving the optimal design. Asolutions manual will be provided.
