Darüber hinaus hat der gelernte Architekt (BDA) sich als Grafiker und Künstler einen Namen gemacht. Unzählige Pfadfinderabzeichen, darunter alle deutschen Kontingentsabzeichen für die World Scout Jamboree sind ein Entwurf von Hartmut. Ein besonders gelungenes Beispiel seines künstlerischen Schaffens ist zum Beispiel das Logo und die Gestaltung des Sonderbriefes zum 17. World Scout Jamboree in Korea 1991.
