Architecture in Berlin 1237-1920
von Gerd Kaiser und Nadine Weiland, herausgegeben von archimaps digitalBerlin, as one of Europe's dynamic metropolises, changes its appearance at a breathtaking rate. War and the post-war era have cost the city many of its important historical buildings, or have taken them out of context. 'Architecture in Berlin 1237-1920' is a contemporary survey of the old surviving Berlin. Nowadays only few buildings bear witness to the city's beginnings, such as the gothic Marien Church or the Ribbeckhaus from the Renaissance. Particular historical architectural testimonials, such as the baroque Schlüter arsenal, the classical Old Museum by Schinkel, the neobaroque Reichstag building or Oberbaum Bridge, were created in this period and wrote architectural history. The early 20th century, the founding period of the world famous Berlin modern age, is portrayed conclusively with buildings such as the Märkischer Museum, the Pergamon Museum and especially the AEG turbine hall by the architect Peter Behrens.
