As a reaction to the experience of radical urban restructuring in the 1960s and 70s, for a long time the city development of Paris was dominated by the preservation and development of the existing architecture. The number of new building projects has also expanded greatly because of increased developmental pressure on inner-city open spaces, following extreme rises in residential house prices and the relocation of the remaining industrial sites out of the city centre. The city centre itself is affected, not only its periphery, for example the conversion of the rail track area of the Gare d'Austerlitz freight depot to a residential and commercial district. Ambitious building projects and the willingness of the city to renew itself have led to very diverse and architecturally interesting projects. This archimap presents an overview and current cross section of the newest developments in Parisian architecture.
