New Architecture in Vienna

Vienna has a diverse and lively architecture scene. Whilst star architects like Coop Himmelb(l)au, Hans Hollein or Gustav Peichl are starting or completing their late work, a new generation is drawing attention to itself with its equal willingness to experiment. Exciting examples are to be found particularly amongst the publicly funded residential buildings. The result is often of a surprisingly high level, whether it is the closing of a gap in the densely built-up inner city or a completely new residential district. Vienna is expanding, unlike in previous decades. Apart from renowned projects like the Museumsquartier, Donau City and the Gasometer Project, there are many large urban development sites which bear testimony to this. They are still in the process of being created and engender curiosity as to the future development of a city which is able to confidently combine its unique historical heritage with architectural avant-garde.
