Language Contact and Language Change in Ethiopia

Die Beiträge zu diesem Sammelband entwickelten sich aus zwei Workshops in den Jahren 2004 und 2007, organisiert von Joachim Crass und Ronny Meyer an der Universität Mainz, die eine internationale Plattform für die Beschäftigung mit dem Äthiopischen Sprachraum bietet. Der Workshop im Jahre 2004 beschäftigte sich mit Deixis, Kopula und Fokus in verschiedenen kuschitischen, omotischen und semitischen Sprachen (vgl. Crass und Meyer, Deictics, Copula and Focus in the Ethiopian Convergence Area, 2007). Im Rahmen des zweiten Workshops, abgehalten vom 13.–14. Dezember 2007, wurden Sprachkontakt und der durch diesen Kontakt hervorgerufene Sprachwandel in Äthiopien auf einer breiteren Datengrundlage diskutiert. Die sechs Beiträge in diesem Sammelband, die auf Basis des zweiten Workshops entstanden sind, stehen repräsentativ für den Facettenreichtum der aktuellen Forschung zu Sprachkontakt und Sprachwandel in Äthiopien. Der vorliegende Band stützt durch eine Vielzahl von Beispielen die Annahme, dass äthiopische Sprachen unabhängig von ihrer genetischen Zugehörigkeit regionale Schemata aufweisen. Diese manifestieren sich in Form zahlreicher konzeptueller und struktureller Ähnlichkeiten. Somit bietet das Werk eine potentielle Bereicherung für die Diskussion um sprachinternen versus kontaktbedingten linguistischen Wandel im äthiopischen Sprachraum.

„The publication [...] collects articles which present some very interesting and new data as well as interpretations on Ethiopian languages, giving them a chance to see the daylight, and, what is more, proposing some theoretical frame, namely the contact-change phenomenon. In the case of Ethiopian languages, this kind of approach is both justified and desirable. In descriptions of Ethiopian languages difficulties arise mainly on the level of the origin of linguistic features, and therefore an analysis of any Ethiopian language, including Amharic and Oromo as the biggest ones, cannot be complete without the contact approach.
